Map for Sep 18th

The map below shows the positions during the day, on the 18th September. The map also shows the main features, farms and bridges that are referred to in the narrative on the battle.

The map, is taken from the “Battle of Chickamauga, Civil War Series” that I bought on my visit to the battlefield.

The map shows the movement of Bushrod Johnson’s force after crossing Reed’s Bridge and then moving south to threaten Wilder’s rear, who was holding up Walker’s attempt to cross at Alexander’s Bridge.

The march of Thomas’ corps can be seen as it crosses Crittenden’s rear to take over the left wing of the Rosecrans’ forces.  This move was not seen by Bragg, and it would later frustrate his plan of turning the Federal left wing.
