Chickamauga

The Battle of Chickamauga was one of the major clashes of arms between the forces of the Federal North and the Confederate South. The Federal Army of the Cumberland versus the Confederate Army of Tennessee in what was later called “The Bloody Battle in the West”.  Just as in other major wars, battles cannot be taken in isolation, they are often the follow-on to previous battles or military moves, and there will then be consequential battles as a result of the one that has just been fought. For this reason I have chosen to start (in the Build up) with the Battle of Murfreesboro, and the moves of the armies as they fell back towards Chattanooga. The choice of Chickamauga as the site of the battle was a result of those moves, and the result of the battle then caused the consequent actions around Chattanooga which took place at Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge.

Since starting the site I have moved the action on to cover Lookout Mountain and Missionary Ridge and hope to take in the later Atlanta Campaign.

The book above is an excellent account of the Civil War by British historian Fletcher Pratt.  It is brilliantly written and incredibly readable. Available via Amazon, use the link.

As updates and changes are made to the site, these will be reflected on the Site Updates page and will allow you to track changes. There is also a page for Links and another for sources I have used in researching the site.  Many of the newer photos are my own, some taken at the battlefield site, but many of those used in the page borders were taken by me at a re-enactment at Bridgeport.

Any errors are my own, please contact me if you spot any, or wish to suggest changes or additions to the content.

A word of thanks to my guides around the battlefield in 1996; my brother-in-law Dave and his friend (and owner of his own cannon), Jim.  Jim with the hat, but it’s not his cannon.

I have removed the Guestbook as there is a ‘malicious’ program filling it with adverts for drugs.

News: I have added a map showing the situation at Chattanooga from 23-25 November.

A few years ago I was on a visit to my wife’s brother who lives near Atlanta.  One day of the visit was taken up with a visit to the Chickamauga battlefield with Dave and his friend, Jim.  That started a fascination with the Civil War (American, as our English Civil War was some 200 years previous to this one!), and a wish to spend some time building a site that would cover more than just the battle itself.  Hopefully the Yanks and Rebs will allow a ‘neutral’ view of this part of their history.
