Nice shots

I have opened this page to show the ocassional group of photos that I particularly like. Invariably I will have had to use photos from other sites but I will credit the owner when I do.

A flying model of a Vulcan.

A great shot of a line-up at Tengah

Underside of aircraft on pan

This photo, and the one below, are from Andy Leitch’s site.  I particularly like them for the way they show Waddington on a cold winters day.  Lincolnshire can get pretty damned cold in the snow, and going out early on mornings like these were not a favourite of mine.  The shot above includes the Special Storage Area (SSA), which contained the station’s ‘stock’ of nuclear weapons.  For those who know the area the main Lincoln/Sleaford road is the other side of the fence, with the SSA the other side of the road.

The shot below looks like the same aircraft from a different position. It looks nearly as cold as Goose Bay and the red intake blanks are easily visible, preventing the snow getting into the intakes while the aircraft is going nowhere.

Some years ago I bought a pack of excellent colour photos from Chris Knox, they were advertised in one of the aircraft magazines.  The photo below is a reduced version of one of those photos.  It gives a nice appreciation of the way that the wing dominates the aircraft, the thickness of it at the root and the size of the intakes for the four Olympus engines. Just behind the flight refuelling probethere are two lights close together on the top of the nose, these are to provide illumination of the probe should the pilots be doing refuelling at night or low visibility.

The photo below was scanned from the January 2007 edition of Quiet & Electric Flight; a magazine for those interested in model aircraft using electric propulsion rather than the older petrol engines many of us will be more familiar with. I was struck by this model of a Vulcan; its got a 72” span and weighs in at 1.8Kg. The guy who built it is Terry Mitchell, I don’t know him, jst think it’s a great model.

Not only does it look great, it flies by God!

The shot below was sent to me by Tony Regan (of www.vulcancrewchief.org). The line-up is at Tengah, 1970.  [The photo is Crown Copyright.]
